HERE’S KALEIGH! Our shy, little 11 lb, gray/tan, 3 yr old, Shih Tzu Yorkie, came from the Hesperia Shelter and she has taken a little time to come out of her shell. The picture below is what she looked like in the shelter, which brought tears to our eyes. No wonder this poor baby was so shut down…
Inside, she would hide under the furniture — outside, she came alive!! Kaleigh wants to be be a happy girl and she is getting there slowly. She does have one shrunken eye, likely congenital, but her other eye is perfect! She loves affection and will give you kisses to show you her love and appreciation, so long as you don’t try to hold her if she doesn’t want to be held. She definitely needs a home where there is another young, small, playful dog who can prove to her that life is good and she doesn’t have to be afraid! She sometimes pees on a pp pad BUT she has had poop accidents in the house. She is about 95% potty trained, thanks to other dogs showing her to go out and having a doggie door (which she uses) — BUT no guarantees at your house! She loves to cuddle in bed — but she cuddles up to you; she doesn’t like to feel restrained. She did not walk on a leash when she arrived, but she has gotten much better. She needs training and practice.
Kaleigh needs to know and understand that YOU are the boss; you just need to tell her gently with your words and actions. Good in the car when you TELL her to behave. If you leave her to her own devices, she will use them! She is not a chewer but she does try chew on stuff left loose — those are her toys!! All these behavior challenges are improving as she feels more secure. It’s obvious to us that she didn’t get much attention in the past and she needs security, love, direction, canine companionship and YOU!! A family with older kids (over 12 — she is skittish) would be welcomed…she does not like being left alone without anyone there, so another dog and humans will be ideal to show Kaleigh that life is good…and getting better! You up for this? Lots of love will find it’s way to you and to Kaleigh if you are!
