ARE YOU LOOKING TO REALLY SAVE A LIFE? ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE? CAN YOU HANDLE AN ALPHA DOG WHO THINKS HE IS BOSS? THEN ADOPT HUGO!!
HUGO came from the Baldwin Park Shelter. This hunky, 19 lb, white/gray, 4-5 yr old, Lhasa Mix was deemed ‘aggressive’ and his problem was he was scared, not treated well in the past and not social. Bad learned behavior. He is a dominant alpha and in the right home, he will be a wonderful dog. But, it will take time, patience and love. Please don’t apply for Hugo unless you are prepared to commit to him!
After a week or two in rescue, we learned that he was very affectionate but leash aggressive. Heavy stimulus from other dogs generated bad reaction. Some time has passed, and as you can see by the video below, he loves to play and needs redirection. He wants to be social and well behaved, so he is now getting professional training. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and whomever adopts him will need to continue working with him.
What we learned about Hugo is he wants to be the boss. No such luck, Hugo. He needs a home with or without another dog (or the other dog should be bigger and #1 pack leader that won’t let Hugo think he is the boss)! Hugo needs boundaries — he is not the boss and needs to be reminded. On leash, he was a bit challenging and he will require a pet parent who understands parameters and has patience! He is 100% better!! His new family should be experienced and prepared to abide by his training to help him best the best dog he can be. He has bitten or tried in the past! He is affectionate, but can be tricky. Once he trusts you, he’s very cool. He has to EARN affection and once he respects you, life will be easier. Otherwise, he will revert to how he was (and still is without parameters).
PLEASE Don’t look the other way or ignore this doll because he’s a work in progress! It is so rewarding to see him blossom. If you love Lhasa, you will love him!! He loves to go for long walks and would be great on a hike. He wants to please. He seems to be potty trained but will use pp pads if he can’t get out. He sits on command and knows he must do so before any rewards! Hugo would be thrilled to be your one and only (OR with another larger dog) and could handle being alone up to 4-5 hrs a day. He definitely would like to have a yard and a pet parent who will love him to life despite his imperfections. Do you have a place in your home and heart for this healthy, wonderful boy? He deserves happiness — who knows what hell he has been through but hopefully the rest of his life will help him forget it!!
