MEET ALASTAIR!!  This handsome, 12 lb, 3 yr old, white, Lhasa Maltese (our best guess), was stuck at the Downey Shelter in the stifling heat.  He was a little grumpy (wouldn’t you be if you were out in the hot sun?) but did better with women than men.  What nobody knew at the time was that he had pneumonia and was not feeling well.  Poor baby got really sick and was hospitalized for five days.  Now that he is all better….he is still a bit fearful at first meeting and will bark at strangers (on walks as well), but he settles down and before you know it, he is cuddling with you!!  He does bark at foreign sounds…and can be reactive on walks, so he needs training for this. Alastair loves to play with his toys and loves to cuddle…but he does have a protective streak when he hears unknown sounds or meets new people.  Usually, he warms up in a short period of time — when he feels safe.  We think that Alastair is probably a bit under-socialized, as he seems to like dogs more than people at first — but once he knows you, he’s a lovebug!   That being said, we believe he must have another, young, playful canine brother or sister.  He can go for long walks…good exercise and stimulation!  Alastair wants to please and training and socialization will do wonders for him!  He seems to be potty trained and will sit by the door to let you know he has to go out…but no guarantees at your house!  A home with a yard, another dog, no children and patient parents who are around a lot to work with him is the ticket to a happy life with Alastair!  He would not do well in an apartment because he does bark at things.  Again, he does prefer women to men — but eventually warms up.  Are you up for it?  Please only apply if you are!
